Marian Steen creates works on paper using a variety of media. Her
use of watercolor and collage shows her inventive response to the
world around her. Read her artist's statement.
Marian's work, which is abstract and semi-abstract, is composed
of subtle textures, bursts of color, and delicate lines. A current
example of her work, her Passage
Series, reflects on paper her journeys through life, in part
by depicting windows and passageways. The paintings, with their
areas of light and dark, display a sensuous, lyrical spirit and
are meant to illustrate dynamically both frustration and hope.
Over the past fifteen years, Marian has exhibited her award-winning
work in individual and group shows at
galleries, in outdoor art festivals, and at other venues. Her paintings
hang in private collections in Europe, South America, and throughout
the U.S.
She taught at Washington University's Fine Arts Institute Program
from 1990 to 1995. Throughout her career, she has given lectures,
demonstrations, workshops and classes to artists' guilds, other
organizations, and individuals.
